The House of Fashion: breakdowns, breakthroughs and new vistas! (Part 1)

I wrote this story on 21st October 2002. Needless to say, I was young and very impressionable.
And of course if some parts seem cheesy, and the technology seems a little outdated, that’s why!
Some of my friends may recognize their names from the story :-) so…
Disclaimer: This story is a work of fiction and any resemblance to events and/or characters dead or alive is purely coincidental!

Enjoy peeps!

Sitting in her office at exactly 8.00 am the intercom buzzed, and Naisieku, her secretary informed her that a Mr. Wambiru was there to see her , “Does he have an appointment?” she asked frowning as she flipped through her diary. “No, but he says the meeting is for your mutual benefit”
Her interest was piqued, “Send him in.”
He came in as she put down the receiver. “Ms. Muthiga”,He said as coming towards her, hand outstretched, “it’s very nice to finally meet you in the flesh.”
“Sit down Mr…..” “Wambiru.”
“Yes how can I assist you?” She asked without looking up. “Well Ms Muthiga its…”“It’s Miss Muthiga.” She cut him short. “Hmh, Miss Muthiga it’s more a matter and how I can assist you.” “What makes you think I need your assistance?” She quizzed finally looking up. “Ma’am it’s an open secret that the House of Fashion is in dire need of capital. That is what I am here to offer you.”
She looked into his eyes and countered “… you must have gotten your information mixed up Mr…” She stopped querringly. “Wambiru,” he said with a tad of irritation. “We are in no such constraints. Now if you would please excuse me…” she picked up a file and flipped through it.
”Ms Muthiga,” he countered with all the irritation he was feeling showing in his voice. “You could at least pretend to be civil and accord me some attention. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think I have the wrong information and I have got quite a lot of information about the House of Fashion.
“Oh yeah?” she raised he eyebrow, “What information?” “This company was started 10 years ago by you, Mugethi Muthiga. This happened after you put eight of your African designs on a catwalk on campus while a third year student there. You were at the time a member of a four woman entertainment group which still occasionally meets to hold events. You built and moved into this premises four years ago at the peak of you business. Your business has been doing pretty well with your prime year profits being just above KES 11m. However, you suffered a major financial setback due to heavy embezzlement by your former long term accountant amounting to KES 50m. What else do you want to know? You report to work every morning at 7.45 am but require your staff here at 8:00….”
“Stop right there, that’s enough. What do you want?” she asked in a nonchalant voice, far from she was feeling, “Who are you?”
“Well I am a business man in town, well all over the country really. I am interested in fashion, and especially in your fashion house.”
“I noticed” she retorted.” “I would like to purchase shares from this company. That way you will get the capital you need….” “I know where you are driving at.” She interrupted.
“Well?…” He asked.
“Let me think, Mr Wambiru, if you were in my shoes what would you do?” She whirled about in her in her chair, appearing to be in deep thought for a minute.
“Mr. Wambiru,” he held his breath, “You are aware that this is a private company, aren’t you?”
“Yes I am.”
“That means we have a policy of not selling our shares to outsiders. You understand that?” “Yes I do.” “Well then, there’s your answer.”
He breathed in deeply to conceal his disappointment and managed to say in a loud voice, “If you ever change your mind, here’s my card, call me.” He dropped it on the desk. “I’ll let myself out,” he said as she rose. “Good day Miss Muthiga.”
